The material selection of the Heavy Metal Washer needs to be accurately matched according to the specific working conditions. The carbon steel version is suitable for general industrial structures, the stainless steel version is for corrosive environments, and the bronze or brass version can play unique advantages in non-magnetic or explosion-proof situations. According to ASTM F436 standardization regulations for heavy-duty gaskets, the hardness range of carbon steel gaskets after quenching and tempering is controlled between HRC 38 and 45. However, since 316L stainless steel gaskets cannot be significantly hardened through heat treatment, their hardness is usually between HRB 80 and 95, which is about 60 to 70 percent of the hardness of carbon steel gaskets. This means that in stainless steel connection systems, the thickness or outer diameter of the gasket needs to be increased to compensate for the lack of hardness. According to actual engineering statistics, the recommended thickness of stainless steel heavy-duty washers for the same bolt specifications is about 25% higher than that of carbon steel. For example, when the thickness of the M16 carbon steel washer is 4.8 mm, the stainless steel version is recommended to be 6 mm thick to ensure that excessive dent deformation does not occur under high preload. This empirical data has been adopted by the internal design specifications of many heavy equipment manufacturers.
In installation practice, the elastic recovery ability of heavy-duty metal washers is crucial to maintaining long-term preload force, and the elastic compression in the thickness direction is directly related to the effective load-bearing width of the washers. According to the ASTM E9 normal temperature compression test method, when a heavy-duty gasket with an outer diameter four times the bolt diameter is subjected to a surface pressure of 200 MPa, its elastic compression amount is about 0.1% of the thickness direction, that is, when the thickness is 6 mm, the compression is about 0.006 mm. Although this compression amount is small, it is enough to absorb the slight elongation of the bolt due to local loosening and delay the attenuation of the preload force. When heavy-duty washers are used with high-strength bolts, according to VDI 2230 systematic calculation criterion, the coupling effect of the friction coefficient of the bearing surface and the friction coefficient of the bolt thread determines the torque-pretightening force conversion efficiency. Actual measurements show that the surface friction coefficient of the sandblasted heavy-duty gasket can reach 0.3 to 0.35, which is significantly higher than the 0.15 to 0.20 of the precision turned surface. This requires the construction personnel to make corrections according to the actual friction coefficient when setting the torque, otherwise a preload force deviation of up to 30% will occur. In view of their key role in anchor bolts of large rotating equipment and pressure vessel head flanges, the installation of heavy-duty gaskets usually requires precise control with the torque-angle method and sampling review with an ultrasonic axial force meter to ensure that the bolt connection remains safe and reliable throughout the equipment life cycle.
