A sliding piano hinge is an innovative continuous hinge. Its unique feature is that the door panel first moves outward a certain distance before opening. Then it rotates around its axis. This combined sliding and rotating motion significantly reduces the front operating clearance needed when the door opens to 90 degrees. The reduction is notable compared to traditional hinges. In practical applications, the sliding stroke is usually 30 millimeters. This can reduce the space occupation around the door by about 45 percent. It is especially suitable for space-constrained environments. These include equipment rooms with narrow aisles. They also include data centers with dense cabinets. Ship cabin spaces are another example. Because the hinge is continuously distributed along the full length of the door, it transfers the door panel's weight evenly to the frame. This avoids localized stress concentration.

 

 

This piano hinge also has clear advantages in load capacity and durability. Take an industrial-grade product with a length of 600 millimeters as an example. Its safe load capacity can reach 180 kilograms. A common hinge of the same length can usually only bear about 120 kilograms. This benefit comes from the integrated reinforced design of the sliding rail and the hinge leaf. In addition, high-quality hinges perform excellently in durability tests. After 100,000 complete sliding and rotating cycles, the increase in opening resistance can still be kept within 10 percent of the initial value. No magnetic properties

All of these hinges can be constructed with all austenitic stainless steel (like 316L) and non-magnetic engineering plastic sliding sleeves. The overall relative magnetic permeability is very low, so as not to interfere with precision magnetic fields. This hinge, in a 1.5 Tesla static magnetic field, shows a magnetic susceptibility that results in less than 0.02 ppm distortion of the magnetic field, which has no visible effect on the imaging quality; while common stainless steel hinges containing ferrite will create a distortion of about 0.8 ppm, which leads to image artifacts. Therefore, the hinge is suitable for use in magnetic resonance imaging chambers, particle accelerators and quantum computing experimental platforms.

Lightweight design

This piano hinge can be made of aviation-grade 6061 aluminum alloy with a hollow structure, which can significantly reduce its weight while ensuring strength. An aluminum alloy sliding piano hinge with a length of 500 mm has a net weight of only 320 grams, while an ordinary steel piano hinge of the same length weighs 910 grams, a weight reduction of about 65%. The lighter hinge effectively reduces the total moment of inertia of the door panel system, making the opening and closing operations lighter and more labor-saving. It is especially suitable for small access doors or portable equipment boxes that are frequently operated manually.

Very low VOC emissions

The self-lubricating materials and sealing gaskets used inside the hinges are all made of medical-grade low-VOC formula and will not release harmful gases when used for a long time in a closed space. After placing the hinge in a 1 cubic meter climate chamber for 72 hours, the measured total volatile organic compound (TVOC) emission was 18 μg/m³, which is well below the EU indoor air quality standard limit of 300 μg/m³. The release amount of the rubber gasket of ordinary hinges is as high as 540 μg/m³. This feature is suitable for use in places where air quality is stringent, such as car interior parts, baby room furniture, and space station experimental cabinets.

Resists frequent scratches

These hinges deposit a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on a stainless steel substrate to significantly increase surface hardness and withstand the wiping and abrasion of daily maintenance. The Vickers hardness of DLC coating reaches 3200 HV, while uncoated stainless steel is only 200 HV. After 1,000 reciprocating frictions with steel wool (load 500 grams), there were only very slight scratches on the surface of the coating, and the gloss retention rate was 92%; the surface of the uncoated sample showed obvious wear and tear, and the gloss retention rate was less than 30%. This hinge is suitable for public facilities such as subway gates and vending machine doors that are cleaned frequently.
