The area around the scratch can still form a new protective layer through the migration of chromium ions. Salt spray re-testing after the scratch exposure showed that the white rust appearance time was only reduced from 200 hours to 180 hours, and the decrease was controlled within 10%. Therefore, yellow galvanized hinges are especially suitable for connection nodes in storage shelves, outdoor cabinets and general industrial equipment that have higher requirements for corrosion resistance.

In terms of cost and environmental considerations, the yellow zinc plating process faces increasingly stringent regulatory restrictions due to the hexavalent chromium content. Currently, many manufacturers have developed trivalent chromium alternative passivation solutions, which have a similar appearance to yellow and comply with the RoHS directive. According to the ISO 3613 method for measuring the quality of zinc layer chromate passivation film, the corrosion resistance of trivalent chromium yellow passivation film is about 15% lower than that of traditional hexavalent chromium. That is, the time for salt spray white rust to appear is about 170 hours. However, if the thickness of the galvanized layer is increased to 12 microns, the white rust time can be increased to more than 200 hours. According to the DIN EN 1935 cycle life test standard for door hardware, after 100,000 opening and closing cycles of the yellow galvanized piano hinge, the gap increment between the pin and the blade is only 0.05 mm, and the coating has no cracks or peeling in the bending area, ensuring the structural integrity under frequent opening and closing at large angles.
