What Turns Steel into Reliable Forklift Forks

Extendable forklift forks are the critical components that directly lift and carry loads. They must be exceptionally strong and durable. Workers start by selecting the right high-grade alloy steel. This steel offers the best combination of strength and toughness. The chosen steel bars are precisely cut to the required fork length. Workers then heat the steel to a high temperature. This heating makes the steel easier to shape in the next steps.

 

Shaping the forks happens mainly through forging or precision bending under heat. Forging involves hammering the hot steel into the classic tapered fork shape. This process compacts the steel's grain structure. Precision bending carefully forms the heel and the tines. Both methods aim to create the exact fork profile needed. After shaping, the forks slowly cool down. This controlled cooling helps relieve internal stresses within the metal.

 

Heat treatment is the next vital stage. The forks are heated again to a specific high temperature. They are held at this temperature for a set period. Then, they are rapidly cooled in oil or water. This step, called quenching, makes the steel very hard. However, quenching also makes the steel brittle. To fix this, the forks undergo tempering. Tempering reheats them to a lower temperature. This reduces brittleness while keeping essential hardness and strength. The result is a fork that can handle heavy loads without breaking.

 

Finally, the forks receive surface treatment. Workers clean them thoroughly using shot blasting. Shot blasting removes scale and roughens the surface slightly. This prepares the forks for painting or coating. A protective coating is applied to prevent rust and corrosion. Common coatings include specialized paints or powder coating. Every single fork undergoes strict testing. Workers check dimensions very carefully. They perform hardness tests at specific points. Load testing confirms the fork can bear its rated capacity safely. Only forks passing every test are ready for assembly onto the extendable forklift.
